Market Check-In for August and September
After a rocky start earlier in the year, August and September have brought steadier conditions, with signs of easing inflation, solid earnings, and clearer direction on interest rates. For investors who stayed the course, it was a rewarding stretch as markets regained momentum.
Market Performance in August
After some volatility in the first half of 2025, the S&P 500, a snapshot of America's biggest companies, picked up steam in August. The index climbed about 3% as investors got excited about cooling inflation and strong corporate earnings. Healthcare stocks led the way with a solid rebound, and softer job data added to the sense that the economy was on firmer footing.
Steady Growth in September
September continued the positive trend, with the S&P 500 closing around 6,688, up roughly 2% for the month and approaching record highs. The highlight came when the Federal Reserve made its first rate cut since late last year, reducing rates by a quarter point to 4 - 4.25%. The move signaled growing confidence that inflation was under control. While unemployment edged up slightly to 4.5%, overall growth held steady.
Looking Ahead
In total, the market gained about 5% over the two months, rewarding investors who stayed focused on the long term. As we move into fall, key indicators like jobs reports and Fed announcements will continue to shape expectations for the months ahead. We’ll continue to monitor developments closely and adjust your financial plan as needed.
