The Truth Behind “Top Advisor” Awards

financial-advisors-virginia

In our industry, shiny badges and “Top Advisor” lists are everywhere. They’re designed to impress but here’s what most people don’t know: many of these awards are pay-to-play. A few years ago, I was offered one of these recognitions. It looked great at first until I learned the catch: to be listed, I had to pay thousands of dollars for the right to use the logo in my marketing. In other words, it wasn’t free recognition for excellent client service; it was an advertising package dressed up as an award.

That’s not to say everyone who appears on these lists isn’t good at what they do. Many are. But the public rarely sees the fine print—eligibility requirements, fees, and marketing partnerships—that shape who gets featured.

What Matters to Us

And here’s the bigger issue: these rankings usually say more about visibility and budgets than about long-term client results. We’ve chosen to step away from these “recognitions” because they don’t align with what actually matters to our clients. Our time, energy, and resources are better spent on:

  • Creating financial plans that give families confidence in uncertain markets.

  • Supporting business owners as they take their next steps with clarity.

  • Providing objective advice and ongoing service—not chasing logos.

Results and Trust Over Appearances

Awards may look good on a website, but they don’t build trust, and they don’t make your financial plan stronger. We believe reputation isn’t bought, it’s earned.
